EDITORIAL INTERNSHIPS
What we offer
The Bay Guardian offers opportunities for its interns to develop reporting skills and to write numerous articles. We also provide workshops for interns on city politics, research and writing skills, and freelancing. Interns advance at their own pace. Although there are no guarantees, interns should leave the paper writing better and faster.
What we're looking for
We are looking for self-motivated people with strong research, fact-checking, and writing skills, but prior journalistic experience is not required. Some familiarity with the Bay Area is helpful. In choosing interns, we take into consideration how well our intern program mirrors the readership our newspaper serves. People of color, lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants from both student and nonstudent populations are welcome.
What we expect
Interns begin the four-month program by writing one Superlist (a guide to interesting, often offbeat services and locations in the Bay Area), then move on to more complex research and writing projects.
News interns help staff reporters with research and news gathering and develop their own short On Guard articles. In time, some interns may write longer news features.
For those whose interests lean more toward arts and entertainment, there are a few slots in each program reserved for A&E interns , who write calendar listings and short reviews. These interns are hired based on experience in a particular area: music, theater, or film.
We also offer a culture intern position for those who would like to write about careers and education, green issues, food and drink, travel, technology, health, beauty, fashion, shopping, cultural ephemera, weird events, nightlife, architecture, design, nature, community, and spiritual matters.
Although the focus for all interns is on reporting, they do have some administrative responsibilities. These include sorting some departmental mail, distributing faxes, and occasional typing or data entry jobs.
Internships require a commitment of two full days each week (during regular business hours) for four months.
Interns' schedules will be arranged at an orientation prior to the internship. All internships are voluntary
and unsalaried.

What we're looking for
We are looking for self-motivated people with a strong interest in
advertising, marketing/communications and sales. An interest in local
events and/or nightlife is a big plus. In choosing interns, we take into
