Though the title of the show is "Seeing," you'll
probably be most surprised at what you don't see in some of the
installations. Change Blindness is a huge computer screen showing
a quiet storefront-sidewalk scene. Every few seconds the screen goes
black for a moment, then flashes back to what appears to be the same
picture. It actually changes significantly each time, but the intervening
black screens prevent your eyes from perceiving the differences. Dozens
of other installations explore the social aspects of seeing. Paul Kaiser's
Inkblot Perceptions analyzes the ways in which interpretations
of Rorschach-like blots vary with age and cultural background. Go to

Wed-Sat, noon-5pm. "The World Is Beginning to Tremble: Ché
= R + Evolution. Ché is remembered today for only a fraction
of what he actually accomplished as a doctor, journalist, photographer,
educator, and of course, revolutionary. His image has suffered the same
fate, reduced over the last few decades to a mere handful of pop-iconic
pictures that belie very little of his real-life complexity. Rectifying
some of this historical oversimplification was what Claudia Bernardi
and 12 of her former California College of Arts and Crafts students
had in mind when they began planning this installation. Bernardi et
al focus on his accomplishments, in particular his literacy campaigns.
Red-bound books are everywhere on every wall: metal plated, wax encrusted,
tied up, stripped, stacked, and punctured. Rather than showing the familiar
image of Ché dead on a canvas stretcher, they re-create the moment
of his martyrdom with a book that's been shot up as Ché's body
was. The show is an unapologetic celebration of Ché's idealism
and self-sacrifice. Through May 24. (Westbrook)
