Though the title of the show is "Seeing," you'll probably be most surprised at what you don't see in some of the installations. Change Blindness is a huge computer screen showing a quiet storefront-sidewalk scene. Every few seconds the screen goes black for a moment, then flashes back to what appears to be the same picture. It actually changes significantly each time, but the intervening black screens prevent your eyes from perceiving the differences. Dozens of other installations explore the social aspects of seeing. Paul Kaiser's Inkblot Perceptions analyzes the ways in which interpretations of Rorschach-like blots vary with age and cultural background. Go to www.exploratorium.edu for complete information. Gregory Lind Gallery 49 Geary, fifth floor; 296-9661. Tues-Sat, 10:30am-5:30pm (first Thurs, 10:30am-7:30pm). "Sewn Together: Graphic Uses of Thread." This exhibition features eight Bay Area artists, all of whom incorporate some aspect of sewing into their art. A couple of the artists work in a heavily conceptual mode, especially Seth Koen with his two red circles, titled Circles No. 4 (+1), but the nature of this medium the texture of the cloth and the hours of manual labor invested in even the smallest piece keeps them all at least somewhat grounded in the realm of reality. Christian Maychack's untitled leather-vinyl-satin creation rides that same line. It's inspired by ordinary domestic furniture and made out of upholsterylike materials, but it perches on the gallery wall and serves none of the ordinary functions of furniture. With its eccentric conglomeration of fabrics and geometry, it declares in no uncertain terms that it's a subject for discussion, not a substrate for sitting. Through Sat/19. (Westbrook). "White Paintings," works by Ron Griffin; "Seeking Subtleties." The minimalist works of Nelleke Beltjens are charmingly small. Arranged on glass tables, the pieces in "Seeking Subtleties" look almost like maquettes for larger constructions, especially considering they're made out of steel, plaster, concrete, and wood materials usually associated with full-scale buildings. She exerts terrific control over each piece, forming it into precise planes and exact angles, but each one also has a mind of its own, and the plaster always cracks as she carves. Beltjens fills these meandering fissures with pigment and pushes the parts back together, creating the effect of a vein of coal or precious metal running through the earth. Her sculptures are about compatibility on a personal scale the ways in which individuals can fit together in a relationship despite weaknesses and breaking points. Through Sat/19.
