Deborah Hay
June 28-29, Noh Space

WHATEVER YOU CALL it – interpretation, adaptation, reconstruction, or just plain performance – what Deborah Hay makes is still choreography. Hay was a member of the Judson Group in the late '60s and has created her own way ever since. Her latest endeavor is the Solo Commissioning Project, for which she teaches a new solo each year to dancers who are sponsored by pledges from members of their community. The idea behind the project is intriguing: take away support for artistic creation from a small elite and put it into the hands of as many people as possible. Since Hay's choreography leaves much room for personal input, a solo will go out into the world in as many versions as there are dancers. At her "Music and Fire" program at Noh Space this weekend two solos will be performed by three dancers: Music by Amanda Coslor, Ron Heglin, and Hilary Preston, and Fire by Evangel King, Kristine Maltrud, and Dawn Trook. Also on the program is John Michael Doyle, who will perform his own solo – one inspired by Hay's work. 7 p.m., 2840 Mariposa, S.F. $10-$15. (415) 621-7978. (Rita Felciano)
